Optimizing airport management to reduce noise

Environmental noise from aircraft take-offs and landings is a serious problem for communities living near airports. A group of Italian researchers is in the process of creating an algorithm that will optimize the operation of the airport in terms of noise reduction. The algorithm is based on neural networks and uses historical acoustic and meteorological data (wind direction). The goal is to create a system that will allow for the optimal selection of runways for airplanes to maximize airport capacity and keep noise levels below acceptable levels.
